Working with Flickr

Rather than explain how to set up an account, I'm going to let you tackle that in class, where I can answer questions on the spot. Groups may set up only one account for now, though everyone will need to do have his or her own account pretty soon.

Here are instructions for setting up a "set" and adding captions, once your account is set up and you have uploaded your best set of pictures (and your partner's favorites):

1. Choose "Organize" from your set of options at the top of the web page; this will launch the organizer tool (may take a few seconds).

2. Click "Load all Photos," and all of your photos will appear in the Organizer window.

3. Click "Create a New Set," and fill in the "title" and "description" fields that appear. Your "description" should explain what your photos have in common: what principle of analysis/division you used to group them together.

4. Drag your photos into the side bar in the order in which you'd like them to appear. You should be arranging here: there should be a reason why one photo leads to and is related to the next.

5. Once you've dragged all your photos in, click on the first one. This will load that photo into the organizer with some options. Here, you should make sure the photo is marked "public" so I can see it. You should also put in a good title for the photo and add a description. The description should explain a) what the photo pictures; and b) how it fits into the set of photos. Click "save" under each photo as you make these changes, then move on to the next photo in your set.

6. Once you have done all this, you should hit "save" in the sidebar. Your set will be saved.

7. Find your URL/Web address. Click "your account" in the list of options at the top righthand side of the page. Scroll to the bottom, and you'll see an item that gives you a permanent URL that people can link to in order to see your photos. Email me the link. If yours is a group "set," please let me know who was in the group when you send the URL.

8. Then roll back to the top of the page and click "yours" to check out your photo page. Enjoy.
